ABOUT US
Behind the Scenes
Verbatim Reporters Association of Ohio sees the value in everyone. We are a catalyst for positive change and since our creation in 2018 we’ve been driven by the same three ideas: support, empowerment, and progress. Learn more about our mission and how we go about making the changes we want to see.
Mission Statement
The mission of the VRAO is to create an understanding of the role of verbatim reporters, realtime closed captioners and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) providers, and to promote verbatim professions through education, training, state-of-the-art technology and high professional and ethical standards.
Our History
VRAO was established in 2018 by four nationally-accredited voice writers from the state of Ohio. This small group often discussed the common misperceptions about voice writing prevalent among the general public and even – and most importantly – among members of related fields that directly impact our profession. Many people are still unaware of the dramatic improvement in technology available to voice writers.
Working with the National Verbatim Reporters Association, our national association, we formed VRAO in order to promote a better understanding of all methods of takedown available in the state of Ohio. This is a critical time to increase awareness of voice writing and other new technologies. There is a looming court reporter shortage nationwide and an increased demand for captioning and CART services.
We owe it to the communities we serve to ensure that professionals of the highest caliber are available to provide enhanced communication access, and to uphold the integrity of the record.
